PCOS and hair loss

Polycystic ovary syndrome (often abbreviated PCOS) is a common condition in which there is an imbalance in a woman’s sex hormones. Although the cause of PCOS has not exactly been determined, most evidence points to it being a genetic disease. One of the most stressful symptoms of the disease is hair loss. It can be very emotionally devastating to notice your hair thinning or falling out without noticeably growing back. The reason women with PCOS may develop hair loss is due to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is usually more prominent in men. However, women experiencing PCOS usually will have a more excessive amount than normal. DHT shrinks the hair follicles, making it very difficult for hair to grow from them. This can lead to “female pattern baldness” occurring in women.

If you are suffering from hair loss see a Trichologist
